Taking place at the stunning Sea Island Resort on Georgia’s east coast, the RSM Classic is annually scheduled at the of November and officially closes the tour season before the next one begins again in Hawaii. Earning his maiden title this week, Sami Välimäki ended the tournament on 23-under-par, one stroke ahead of American Max McGreevy.

The Finn was hot out the gates when he carded an opening 66 only follow up with a phenomenal 8-under-par round of 62 on the Friday. He kept his form through Saturday and was the overnight leader heading into the final round. With a mixed start of birdies and bogeys however, his competition was never far behind him.

Max McGreevy had finished in style with a birdie on the 18th, allowing him to climb to and finish on 22-under-par. Välimäki would refuse to drop shots further however and carded birdies on holes 10 and 15 to reach 23-under. He rammed home a fantastic 15-foot putt to save par on 16 and would go on to par his last two holes.

He made history as Finland’s very first PGA Tour winner. The 27-year-old has won twice on the DP World Tour and narrowly missed out on the WWT Championship when he was runner-up to Benjamin Griffin in Mexico just 2 weeks ago.

Välimäki had admittedly been finding his game tough lately, but he admitted a recent streak of great form has aided him in finding the right mindset to secure a trophy “It has been a long road of course. I feel like it’s a really tough year even when I kind of played decent golf, and then to keep pushing and find some good grooves in the last few tournaments, it feels amazing.”

Although most of us will never find ourselves winning on the PGA Tour anytime soon, we get the same great feeling each time when we find the back of the cup for a birdie, or we settle into a cosy chair in the clubhouse having just beaten our handicap.
