Last week, Blackley Golf Club had the honour of hosting the finals of the Lawrence Batley Trophy, one of the most respected events in the region’s golfing calendar.

The finals brought together some of the best players from across the area, all of whom had battled their way through earlier rounds to earn their place at Blackley. The course was presented in excellent condition, thanks to the hard work of our greenkeeping team, and it provided a fitting stage for a day of high-quality golf.

Huge thanks to Steve Newton for helping organise.

Secretary report:

Despite forecasts of thunderstorms, Blackley enjoyed sunshine for most of the competition, and the course looked superb with magnificent greens. Many thanks to Blackley Golf Club for being excellent hosts.

The day began with the Individual Matchplay Final, where defending champion Ian Kilburn (Crow Nest Park) faced Clive Richards (Hebden Bridge). After a tight contest, Ian pulled away with four straight pars to win 4&3 and retain his title.

Next came the League Finals, with Bradley Park (Section B winners) meeting Hanging Heaton (Section A runners-up). Bradley Park made strong starts in all matches and showed great determination on the back nine, eventually securing victory with early wins of 6&4 and 4&3, before completing a clean sweep 8-0.

The day concluded in the clubhouse with refreshments and trophy presentations by the Blackley Captain, before the trophies were sent for engraving. A formal presentation will follow on Friday 12th September at Saddleworth Golf Club’s Open Day.

Sincere thanks to all clubs who hosted matches throughout the competition – your hospitality has been first class.

David Middleton, Match Secretary
